Bassnectar NYE 2013 Recap

New Year’s Eve 2013 was one of the most epic New Year’s to date! I rang in 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee at the Bridgestone Arena, documenting Bassnectar’s 360 degree show of pure insanity! Brendan Donohue, Matt Miller, Kelly Hite, Robert Bragdon and Jonathan Gaynes were a tremendous crew to work with. I was so proud to be a part of the Break on a Cloud team and put my time lapse and video skills to the test. Lorin put on one memorable show and I cannot wait until we get to do this all over again!

Music: Bassnectar’s remix of “Rez” by Underworld (as heard at midnight during the NYE 360 degrees set Decemer 31, 2012)

Humungotron + Zamboni + Me = Best Night Ever

Image

Last night was EPIC and one of the best nights of my life! I was honored at the Tampa Bay Lighting game on the largest jumbotron (or as I like to call it, the humungotron) in all of North America for winning 1st place in their inaugural Celebration of the Arts competition. Back in October a reception was held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum for the artists whose work was accepted into the show. The jurors were from the Tampa Museum of Art, the St Pete Fine Arts Museum, the Dali Museum and Mrs. Penny Vinik. Over 300 artists submitted work and 41 artists work are now displayed (and available for purchase) around the suite level at the Forum. Check out the stories and videos from that memorable evening:

Not only was I on the humungotron last night, but I also got to cross something off of my bucket list – riding on a Zamboni at a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game! Man, was that a blast! While Thunderbug and I couldn’t convince the driver to let us take the Zam for a spin, he drove us around the ice for a night I will never forget. Check out my view:

Having attended the very first Lightning game in October 1992 at the Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds as a kid as well as all of the joy and excitement the team has brought me in the past 20 years, made winning this award that much more of an honor. I was there when Manon Rheaume became the first woman to play in an NHL game, when the team outgrew the Expo Hall and moved to play at the Florida Suncoast Dome, for goaltenders such as Daren Puppa, Nikolai Khabibulin and Johan Holmquist, I’ve watched left-winger Dave Andreychuck, current captain Vinny Lecavalier, veteran Marty St. Louis, and many, many more all make history. I witnessed John Tortorella lead the Bolts to the Stanley Cup (which has now been bumped down to be my second favorite game) and I was even one of many kids to help name Thunderbug. Merging hockey and art couldn’t have been a more organic experience for me and am privileged to have been recognized.

Here are some of the photos I captured on my iPhone at last night’s 5-2 win over the Panthers, as well as a link to my interview shown last night on the HUMUNGOTRON! I must also mention that the Panthers racked up 37 minutes of penalties. Pretty sure that’s the most I’ve ever seen.

Many thanks to the Tampa Bay Lightning for providing me with this opportunity. Scott Audette, thanks for the photos and your support. Kelley Cureton, you’re fantastic at what you do. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done and all of the hospitality at the games. To everyone else, thank you for your continued support. I wouldn’t be here without all of you. GO BOLTS!!

Here’s a short article I wrote for Creative Loafing Tampa on what to expect in the upcoming (shortened) NHL season. See you at Saturday’s home opener!

NYC’s NYE Ball Drop Tradition

Very interesting read on NYC’s ball drop on New Year’s Eve. My guess would have been that the ball weighed two to three thousand pounds, not 11,875! Wowzahs!

Have a safe and healthy 2013 friends!

The Writing on the Wall

On a recent trip to Miami to shoot for my B is for Box series, a dear friend of mine took me to Miami’s Design District as well as the Wynwood Arts District. The neighborhoods are full of some of the most gorgeous street art I have ever seen. One graffiti artist incorporated a large grate on the side of a building into his robot; another used the side of an entire building, blending the characters and trees in with the windows. I even got to see Captain America smoking crack! While I’m sure it happens, each artist is respectful of the next paying close attention as not to cover up or destroy the previous artists work. There were many new pieces popping up for Art Basel and I can’t wait to check them out during all of Basel’s festivities next week! Enjoy!

Small business Saturday is here! Today is a day to celebrate and support small businesses around your community. Last year over one hundred million people shopped small; invigorating and supporting their communities. Book a portrait photo session with me and save $50 off of the normal $200 sitting fee. I’ll also throw in a free 8×10! This is good through Monday, but I’m already almost booked through the holidays, so act fast. Thanks for your continued support!

Space Shuttle Endeavour’s Journey through the Streets of L.A.

Kudos to Bryan Chan for creating a gorgeous time lapse of Space Shuttle Endeavour’s 12 mile trek through the streets of L.A. to it’s retirement home at the California Science Center in Exposition Park. The shuttle rolled through the streets dodging poles, trees and houses. This is a must watch!
